Carried to Connect: Eileen's Story

For World Autism Awareness Day, we wanted to connect with a family who has found babywearing helpful for their child with autism. We chatted with Eileen of The Autism Cafe, who is a mother to Charlie, who is 5 years old, and Jude who is 2.5. Read on to learn Eileen and Charlie's story on how their Tula Carrier provides additional security for both of them.

Please tell us a little bit about your family and how autism plays a role in your journey?

I was born and raised in France but I’ve been living in Austin, Texas for 7 years now with my family. Charlie was diagnosed with autism just before his second birthday and up until a couple of months ago, he was completely nonverbal. He started repeating sounds this year and using multiple word approximations so we’re overjoyed. I myself am on the autism spectrum too, though I was diagnosed high-functioning.

What are some ways that using a baby carrier like the Tula Baby Carrier helps your family?

Charlie is 5 but due to his autism, he has no sense of danger whatsoever. For example, he runs towards the street without thinking twice. He also has an urge to just escape. It’s stressful to attend events. We have to watch Charlie much more closely than any other kid. If we were to get separated in a crowd, he wouldn’t be able to tell anyone his name, let alone how to contact us, his parents. Having a carrier helps tremendously in these situations. It’s a way to keep Charlie safe and close to us. Charlie loves being carried too. I think he likes the proximity. He can also hide himself if the situation becomes too overwhelming. I love that our Tula is convenient to bring with us, and it takes up a lot less room than a stroller.

Why do you think babywearing (using baby carriers) has been helpful?

Comfort, safety, and convenience. It’s helped keep Charlie safe and it provides him with comfort. He especially likes to be carried on my husband's back. He can see everything from up high and it’s like getting a piggyback ride, which is one of his favorite things.

What would you like people to know when meeting Charlie?

Personally, I like when people ask questions about Charlie. I don’t want people to feel uncomfortable or feel like autism is taboo. I also want people to know that Charlie probably won’t answer to them or even look at them, but I do enjoy talking about it and people shouldn't be shy.

Anything else you would like to share about your experience with babywearing.

Carriers aren’t just for babies. Charlie is very comfortable in his toddler Tula. It’s a must-have for our family trip and daily life and simplifies outings for us a lot.

Thanks for sharing your story Eileen! You can follow Eileen's parenting journey on her blog and her Instagram.

5 Reasons We Love "Fancy" Tulas

5 Reasons We Love "Fancy" Tula Wrap Conversion Carriers

1. Incredible Artistry

The woven material used to create our high-end Tula Wrap Conversion Carriers are sourced through a collective of textile artists that hand weave the unique and beautiful material. Each artisan creatively maps out the intricate patterns and color combinations to transform thread into wearable art. Some even hand-dye the threads in order to accomplish the final color and weave combination. They take inspiration from all sorts of ideas, places, and meanings and interpret them into one-of-a kind designs. These textile artists are independent small businesses and many are women.

Here's a behind the scenes look at what the Queen Hatter from Mad Hatter Warped & Woven does to create their handwoven fabric.

2. Woven by Hand

The material used for our special “fancy” Tula Carriers is often woven by hand on a large loom. This intricate process takes meticulous work of preparing the loom and weaving the threads together. Often, the hand weavers work by themselves, or in small groups, to create their textile art. The process to hand weave the material can take weeks to plan, prepare, and make.

3. Rare and Precious

Because of the long, detailed process to create the handwoven material, it is often created in very limited quantities and is not reproduced. We often receive a small amount of one design, so the number of Wrap Conversion Carriers we can make with a specific design and color of a handwoven is just a handful or, at times, less. The handmade quality of the material gives each carrier its own unique, one of a kind look.

4. Converted by Hand in Poland

Tula Wrap Conversion Carriers are made in our original Poland facility, where Baby Tula began. Seamstresses who are long skilled with creating our signature carriers create each Wrap Conversion Tula Carrier by hand.

5. Ultra Soft and Moldable

The characteristics of a handwoven material is extremely soft and malleable. Our high-end Tula Wrap Conversion Carriers, thus, have a similar look and feel. They mold nicely around your child and give an marshmallowy support. The soften up quickly and feel closest to how it would feel to carry your child in a woven wrap, yet with the quick and comfortable wear of a Tula Carrier.

Building Your Community

Building Your Parenting Community

World Down syndrome day

Something that's important to us, here at Baby Tula, is supporting community building because we feel that connecting with other caregivers who relate to you helps you so much on your parenting journey. When facing new experiences or celebrating big wins, it's always nice to have people by your side. Today is World Down syndrome day, and we wanted to feature Jamie's experience with having a daughter with Down syndrome and finding a connection with another family online and through their love of Tula.

Scroll down to also learn how you can enter a giveaway in honor of World Down syndrome Day and to read what Jamie shared:

World Down syndrome day is a day to wear our blue and yellow, celebrate our loved ones with Down syndrome, and share with the world how they are truly #morealikethandifferent. I never knew this day existed, and now I love having a day set aside to remind the world how precious our Gracie is and how perfectly she was created. Down syndrome isn’t scary and it isn’t a bad thing - it’s just a different normal, and we are so grateful for it.

This day is also a fun day to cheer for our other friends who rock that extra chromosome - and two that we love cheering for are Jax and Niko.

One of the wonderful things about social media is how you can instantly be connected with others who have things in common with you. For Holly and I, Down syndrome and open-heart surgery were the things that connected us. With me in Alabama and her in Canada, social media brought us closer at a time when we needed it!

Holly reached out to me before her newly-adopted son, Jax, had open-heart surgery. Through the great world of Instagram and blogs, she had seen that our Gracie had gone through that just a few months earlier. It was so great for two strangers to be able to learn from one another and encourage each other through heart surgery and now, almost 4 years later, continue to encourage through therapies, toddler tantrums, and the journey of being the best moms we can be.

And of course, we are both obsessed with Tulas - particularly the Free-to-Grow. It makes it easy to switch between kids who need to be carried.

Thanks for sharing Jamie! Follow Jamie and Holly to see more about their amazing children and families! And head to our Instagram page to enter a giveaway for a Tula Wrap Conversion Free-to-Grow Carrier and a $50 store credit to More Alike Than Different
